Hurricane Unit Fundraiser

04 November 2012

All the proceeds from my Hurricane unit will go towards Hurricane Sandy relief in Lindenhurst, Long Island, NY.  This is the town I live in and teach in.  I have been blown away by the generosity and comradery I have witnessed after the hurricane.  My town is full of awesome people!  Way to go Lindy!!!

Click below to check out this unit on TpT!  It is getting the sweetest feedback.

Other Ways to Help
My mother, a reading teacher in our district, is collecting new children's books.  Her school is on the water and the area was the most affected.  The children lost everything.  The school was ok, but did not have power for a long time.  If you would like to send a new or almost new book to her you can at:

Maria Bohrer
Harding Ave. Elementary School
2 Harding Ave.
Lindenhurst, NY 11757

You may also email giftcertificates to .  Thank you!!!

*Any extra books will be donated to neighboring areas affected.

You can donate directly to help Lindenhurst through Camp Bulldog!  Click here.

Here is a news clip of the devastation here in Lindenhurst.

Photos from the storm and clean up.

 Before the hurricane even hit.

After the hurricane hit:

Not my car...but ouch!

Everyone helping out after the hurricane:

Supplies collected by the Lindenhurst Teacher's Union, Lindenhurst residents, and the Lindenhurst Fire Department.

A few parents helped organize a "Trunk or Treating" event around a local park.  We wanted to make up Halloween to the kiddos who did not get a chance to trick or treat.  It was so much fun and I am so glad I went and was able to bring a smile to children's faces.
Sophie and Niles came along.  They were a hit with the kids.

This little cutie was in love with Sophie!

Thanks for all the love and support!  I really appreciate all of you.  Hugs!!!

Here are some Hurricane books you might want to check out on

I would like to thank Wise Owl for posting about this on her blog and bringing me to the Teachers Helping Teachers link below.  Click to check it out.

Amy Journell of What Happens in First Grade has been so kind to share my post on her blog and to donate the proceeds of her adorable Thanksgiving Recipe Book to the Red Cross.  Please, click below to check out her post.

With your help I raised $515.95 through the sale of my Hurricane unit!!!  Thank you to all who purchased.  I sent the money via Pay Pal to Camp Bulldog!

  12. Erica, I am from Lindenhurst also and I am lucky to have only lost my power. My heart goes out my Lindenhurst neighbors and friends who have lost so much during Sandy. My granddaugthers attend Harding Ave Elementary School. Not sure on the damage that school has but it is south of Montauk so only time will tell. Thank you for the support. Ann Marie

  13. I'm from Westchester, NY and boy--I'm glad you are safe! I'm so sad what has happened to LI, NJ and parts of Westchester. What a great idea with your unit and for the trunk or treating! Our festivities were cancelled due to the outages and I am still waiting for word if we are going back to our school and being relocated again.
    Stay safe!

  14. Hi Erica! I'm convinced your pics of your parents' neighborhood is my old neighborhood...Bergen Point, Sandpiper and Dolphin Lanes. We were original owners on 312 parents moved in 2002 and I live in the Capital Region. Back in the day there was no sewage plant, the golf course was in its infancy, and Angelica Court had not yet been developed, nor was there a turn off into the neighborhood. At the time, you may or may not know, the two street neighborhood was known as Longwood Harbor. How is everyone doing with the aftermath? I don't have much info, but it seemed like the neighborhood took quite a hit. Best, Debra

    1. Yes, my parents live on Sandpiper Lane. Only the house on the corner of Old Bergen got hit hard with flooding. Everyone else is doing well, just water in the crawlspace. Thanks for asking. I love their neighboorhood.

    1. Awe, you are too sweet Nikki! Thanks for the offer.

  20. So glad you are safe!! The kiddo's look so cute trick or treating! If you need more donations for a giveaway fundraiser let me know. You can have anything I have! :)

  21. Erica I was in Lindenhurst yesterday helping a friend. I'm so sorry for your town, it was hit pretty bad. I live in Huntington, we were out of power for a while and lost a lot of trees but nothing like the devastation on the South Shore. I hope you raise a lot of money with your great unit.

  22. I'm from Queens so I know what you're going through. The teachers in my school volunteered in the Rockaways on election day. It's going to take months for NY and NJ to get out of this mess. I hope you raise a lot of money.

  23. My niece and nephew live in Lindenhurst. They may even go to your school. I'm checking on that. They had their house destroyed in the storm and it is really tough on them. Thanks for all you are doing. We are trying to support from California but it is difficult not being there.

  24. Hi Erica,
I just downloaded your hurricane packet and plan on using in for a service project lesson starting tomorrow. What a great idea! I’m a college student studying elementary education and will present this lesson to a first grade class. Would it be okay if the students wrote some letters of encouragement and mailed them to your class? I look forward to hearing back from you. I’m glad you are safe!!!

    1. You can send them to my mom's school. My student's were not really affected by the storm, except for lost power. We are further north from the bay. You can email her at
Thanks! I appreciate you buying the packet.

    2. Awesome! I will connect with her. Thanks so much.

  25. Wow! I'm really sorry for you and your community. That's really tough. Glad you're safe though!!
