Spelling Homework Menu

16 September 2013
This year, I decided to try a spelling homework menu.  Above is my cover page for this weeks' words.   I hope and think my students will enjoy having a choice of activities.   I don't feel my first graders are ready to do their homework in a spelling notebook just yet.  Nor do I think the notebook will remain food free, if I start sending it home now.  (I get grossed out sooo easily!)  So, I created this packet with primary penmanship lines and simple lines (for 2nd grade & up or the end of the year).
To set up the homework for this week, I printed the menu page from the editable file in the packet.  Then I print the "Spelling Rhymes," "Three Times Each," and "Spelling Sentences."  I edited the "Spelling Word Search" and "Spelling Unscramble" pages in the editable file.   I printed all the pages and then copied them double-sided to save paper.  I made sure to include five different spelling activities.  The students only have to complete four activities for the week - they get to choose the four.

A lot of people have asked about my spelling word lists.  These lists were created years ago, when a group of us got together as a grade and pick spelling words.  We based our word picks on our phonic elements for the week.  We pulled five sight words from Fry's first 100 sight words.   The sight words start with the letter/sound we are reviewing.  The other five words are based on some sort of phonogram (word family).  Later in the year, the words change to include digraphs, long vowels, vowel teams, and soft sounds.

I promise to be back soon with visual plans!  I am only on my second week of school and I am OVERWHELMED.  I know you understand and have been there.

  1. This looks great Erica! :) I love your ideas. :)

    Sugar and Spice

  2. I love your blog too, but the yellow is tricky to read...maybe a bit of a darker shade mixed in would do the trick. It's okay on the list on the side, but the section where you introduce yourself is really hard to read.
Thanks for sharing all your great ideas.

  3. Hi Erica. I would love to buy your spelling packet. I am also interested in your word list. Are they included. My team mate and I are looking for new spelling words for our first graders. The list we use do not make sense. Thanks, Julie heyjbales@sbcglobal.net

    1. Click on the link in the post to check out the packet. I don't have the list for sale.

  4. Hi Erica,

I love the frame you used to create your magnets!! Where did you find the frame and letters?

    A Very Fond Follower!
